Six Directions
Exhibition at the University of Maryland, September 21-22-23 2008
The exhibition presents 30 works by Israeli Artists,
having a dialogue between their Israeli identities, the past and present.
The Symbol of Magen-David reoccurs as a fragile line throughout the works
and tells the story of the Israeli experience.
The exhibition SIX DIRECTIONS challenges and
provokes the Jewish-Israeli identities.
The choice of works and images brings to light
memorable moments, pieces of personal life experiences from different times
and places that expose unconscious feelings and thoughts that flow beneath
the surface.

יעקב פורת: מגן דוד (שמן על נייר)
זאב ברקן בחר לצטט באלבומו בהקשר לעבודתי זאת את הפסקה הבאה
מדברי פרופ' נורית גוברין במאמרה "קפקא של יעקב פורת":
"חיפושיו המתמידים של יעקב פורת קשורים בילדותו רבת-התהפוכות,
הקשה והמגוונת, התחקותו אחר זהותו היהודית והישראלית, הפנמתו את
מאורעות העבר וההיסטוריה המשפחתית, כמו גם אלה של ההווה והחברה
בישראל ומקומו בתוכה. עמידתו בתוך כמה מענפי האומנויות הציור,
הספרות, המוסיקה והצילום, מאפשרת לו להרכיב יחד את המיוחד שבכל אחת
מהן ולהביאן לידי אחדות של ניגודים". - ולא מן הנמנע, שבכך חושף
זאב ברקן היבטים תמאטיים בעבודה הנדונה...
לי נראה, שאם יש בציור משמעות שניתן לנסחה במילים, יש לחפשה
ב"קונטרפונקט" שנוצר בין המגן דוד ה"מדמם" לבין האלמנט הלבן
שמתחתיו...

Jacob Porat:
Star of David (oil on paper)
In writing on this work of
mine, Zeev Barkan chose to quote the following paragraph by
Professor Nurit Govrin in her article on 'The Kafka of Jacob
Porat':
'The constant searching of
Jacob Porat is rooted in his tumultuous childhood, difficult and
very varied, his search for his Jewish and Israeli identity, his
internalizing of past events and his family history, as well as
those of the present, and of his place in Israeli society. His
standing in several branches of the arts, painting, literature,
music, and photography enables him to fuse the special aspects
of each one and form a unity of contrasts'. It is possible that
in this way Zeev Barkan reveals thematic aspects in the work
under discussion...
To me it
seems that if there is significance in the painting which can be
expressed in words, it should be sought in the "counterpoint"
between the 'bleeding' Star of David and the white element
below…
